Sports coaches have long known the power of visualization in giving their teams and athletes the edge in competitions. But it is equally powerful in helping you to achieve the life you really want. If you’re stuck in a life that is not making you happy, try these techniques to help turn your dreams into reality.
Really Feel Your Alternative Reality
Visualization can be a powerful tool in making your dream future as real as your present. When you imagine your future success, use all your senses to build a picture of what you can see, smell, hear, taste, and feel. What are you wearing? How do you feel? What’s different in how you experience your future success?
See It from Different Viewpoints
Be the screenwriter, director, and star of your future life. See what your dream life looks like, not just from your own perspective but from outside. What does your family see? Your friends? What do your colleagues notice as you succeed in building your success?
Imagine the audience rising to the feet as you walk up to accept your award. See the interview chair shake your hand as they offer you the job. Make it as real as you can.
Make the Future Present
Visualization can also help you act as if you were already future Successful You. You can build your successful persona by asking yourself, how would Successful You handle that conversation? What would Successful You do when offered an opportunity? If you rehearse your future success, it will eventually become your present success.
Boost Your Visualization Practice
You can add other techniques to boost the power of your visualization practice. Find affirmations and self-talk prompts that are meaningful for you and add them to your visualizations. Use what you have learned from the different viewpoints practice to add to how you would like other people to talk about you.
You can write down encouraging mantras and post them on your bathroom mirror, or as your computer or smartphone wallpaper. Surround yourself with positivity.
Make A Vision Board
A vision board is simply a collection of images and words that encapsulate your aspirations. It can be an app or a corkboard, whiteboard, or Pinterest board. Collect pictures and affirmations that really speak to your vision and to the person you want to be.
Keep your vision board in plain sight and remind yourself that what you want is achievable.
You CAN do it!
